GABRIELLA PAYNE

JOURNALIST

Home: Welcome

ABOUT

Gabriella Payne is an aspiring broadcast journalist and foreign correspondent, who recently graduated with a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) with Distinction from RMIT University in Melbourne at the end of 2020.

With her keen sense of curiosity, drive and passion for the industry, Gabriella has seen her work published with The Jakarta Post, The Age, Channel Nine and many local newspapers. She has also produced, presented and conducted live interviews on air with Good Health Radio, ABC Ballarat and SYN 90.7 FM.

After impressing her mentors during an internship, Gabriella was asked to join the team at the Star News Group as a casual reporter. Over the past few months, Gabriella has written 3 - 4 articles per day for the Dandenong Star Journal, working under the pump in a deadline driven environment (and doing this remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

At the end of 2020, Gabriella was nominated for an Ossie Award for a photo journalism project of hers, which featured the residents of Kampung Akuarium in North Jakarta - a community fighting hard to rebuild their homes after being displaced.

Journalism has always been a dream career for Gabriella and she strives to achieve fairness, balance and accuracy in all her work. As a confident, outgoing and adaptable young journalist, Gabriella is excited to see what the future holds and ready to take on any challenge thrown her way.

PHOTO JOURNALISM

Kampung Akuarium - North Jakarta, Indonesia
January 2020

Selected photographs nominated for a 2020 Ossie Award for photo journalism.

Residents of the Kampung Akuarium were forcibly evicted from their homes in 2016, leaving many with no other option but to live in tents or return to their homelands. Since regaining the Kampung, the community here has come together to fight for their rights and rebuild their homes in a sustainable way, hoping to prove to the government that they can use the land wisely.
